A breaking-through expedition took off from Magadan Region on Wednesday, July 20. Participants will take a long boat trip to cover a 3000-km distance crossing three different Russian regions. Their route will run through the entire length of the Kolyma River, the East Siberian Sea, and the rivers of Chukotka. Travelers expect to reach the final destination of their expedition in Anadyr by the mid of September 2022.

Expedition participants are members of the Plan X Adventure Team hailing from St. Peterburg. The MAKOCHUAN route got its name after the capital letters of regions to cross (Magadan – Kolyma – Chukotka – Anadyr). To take this challenge, three unique vessels have been prepared. The first one – “Sperm Whale” – has already hit the headlines in local media as one of the world’s biggest inflatable boats boasting 11-meters in length. “Sperm Whale” is the flagship of the expedition. It will cover the distance from the starting point in Seymchan, Magadan region to Pevek, Chukotka.

The second stage of the expedition takes off in Pevek, where participants are planning to take two smaller aero boats with propellers. They are designed to safely pass through the shallow waters of the Chukotka rivers. Participants will travel on aero boats upstream from the mouth of Chaun River to the ridges of the Chukchi Plateau and Lake Elgygytgyn. The next stage involves rafting down the Enmyvaam and Belaya River to the city of Anadyr – the last checkpoint of the expedition.

“We are so thrilled to get that chance and travel along the route that keeps memories about the world’s famous geographers and discoveries. The Kolyma stage is closely associated with the pioneer Semen Dezhnev. The sea stage will take us back to the times of the North-Eastern Expedition of Nikolai Evgenov which turned out to be a very tough one. The Chukotka breakthrough will remind us of expeditions held by the legendary geologist Sergey Obruchev,” – says Sergey Severin – the Plan X team leader.

It is going to be a 100% stand-alone expedition. In simpler words, participants will have only a couple of chances to visit settlements and fulfill fuel supplies during the next 2 months until they reach the final destination. All the rest they must prepare right from the start.

Travelers are going to meet numerous obstacles on their way. The weather conditions are extreme, which can be the main challenge. Participants will have to go through retreating ice while passing the waters of the Arctic Ocean during the stage from the mouth of the Kolyma River to Pevek. The new challenge may expect travelers along the coastline. Participants can experience the notorious South Wind with a speed reaching 40 meters per second.

The PLAN X Adventure Team is a pool of proven experts and pioneers specialized in long-term stand-alone expeditions. They were the first to discover various tourist routes. The track record of the team’s achievements looks impressive. They managed to cross frozen Baykal on bicycles back in 2015 covering the distance from the northernmost to the southernmost point. Back in 2017, the crew traveled from Krasnoyarsk to Arkhangelsk on a sailing catamaran. In 2018, they made their way rowing from the source to the mouth of the Northern Dvina River. In 2021, the team managed to walk along the rivers of the Komi Republic overcoming the water route between Vorkuta and Ukhta once considered insurmountable. No one would ever dare to take the challenge except for the Plan X Adventure Team.
